I thik they are fairly important. It shows the band has depth. A song with short and sweet lyrics with a purpose seem to destroy a long meaningless one. Some bands even put stuff like, anit-racism, social injustices, politics. I like stuff like that plus artsy stuff about; nature, space, relationships, etc etc.
a good example for me is, http://youtube.com/watch?v=WUqK50hEQlA
How important are the lyrics in a song to you?
Lyrics for pretty much depend on the band, I don't go looking for sweet, loving, peaceful music with Cannibal Corpse or strong Christian values in Deicide.
The way I feel about lyrics usually have to do with what I'm feeling at the moment, so I agree lyrics are important to me to a certain extent. The Iced Earth video was a great one with the dedication.
Reply:It really depends on what type of band it is. If the band has a strong instrumental back, I might overlook cheesy and even cliche lyrics. But if a band has weak instrumentals, they better make up for it in the lyrics!
Good lyrics just makes a band so much better because it adds a much more personal tough to it when i can relate to the song, and it doesn't necessarily have to have a direct connection.
I like songs with pretty surreal lyrics (ie Yes, Porcupine Tree) because they just have so much more room for interpretation.
Reply:well for me
i like bands that have moody/silly lyrics
and they still have meaning to me
i still appreciate it.
on the other hand if i hear a song or band with deeper lyrics and more meaningful lyrics - it gets to me on a sentimental level. i can relate to both silly pointless lyrics and intellectual meaningful deep lyrics etc
Reply:I'm a huge fan of poetry and writing so lyrics hold so much meaning. When I get a new album the first thing I do is sit down and listen to it while reading the lyrics. I have even considered keeping a notebook of some favorites. It's the way a band can express themselves with words and get a meaning across to the listeners.
But then again I love instrumentals as much as lyrics. I'm not going to hate a band for having not so decent lyrics but if their lyrics touch me and hold meaning in the heart then I'll like them even more.
Reply:Depends. If it's like Cannibal Corpse, I already get the violent feeling. So I don't really care about the lyrics there.
If it's like Metallica, then I would care. But lyrics aren't the most important thing in the world. I would still listen to a band even if they had crappy lyrics.
Reply:Very important in songs that have a real life meaning, such as Metallica fade to black, and Megadeth - in my darkest hour. Less important in songs that speak about fictional things. Even less important in songs where the screaming is so intense you can't understand a single word!
Reply:Very important. it's like the whole meaning of the song. If the lyrics suck, it makes the song alot worse.
The only aweome meaningless songs are by Beck.
Reply:Pretty important, but if the rest of the song really rocks then the lyrics are one of the last things on my mind.
