"Dear God", I prayed through sobs of pain and loss, as I read the last letter you wrote. I remember thinking, if I fell in love with you(1), that your song will fill the air(2) and enfold my mind and heart. Your first line was. "Close your eyes and think of me."(5) And I did just that. You explained how lonely and scared all of you were. You told me of the injuries and deaths in your platoon. You told me how sorrow lingers, shadows only fill the empty room,(3) when, at last, you try to sleep. You told me how much you cherished any news from home and how heartstrings hold tighter than the roots of a live oak tree.(4) You begged, "Comfort me through all this madness,(10) 'cause you seem to understand the urgency."(7)


And I sent you my love and I prayed that you would be protected before you set out on that last road. And, John, I saw an angel, of that I'm sure. "Close your eyes and think of me," I burst into song, albeit quite lamely. "Just try it and I'm sure you'll see, 'cause you seem to understand the urgency."





"I saw an angel, of that I'm sure," she said, eyes downcast and demure. "But heartstrings hold tighter than the roots of a live oak tree and just between you and me, I'd really prefer to just go play Yahtzee."





I gave up then, I'm not sure why. Maybe she's right, I'm not her guy. "Take these broken wings and learn to fly, yeah right, therapy guru," I thought with a broken-hearted sigh.

Just then I saw her - she must've been God-sent. At the very least - her looks! Her heavenly scent! I sent a heartfelt thanks God's way, and sorted through pickup lines for the150th time that day.
